I am a 30 year local resident, Retired U.S. Army, and decided I needed a VW to tow behind our Motorhome. This the 5th one I have owned, including a right hand drive Super Beetle in another country. That was an experience driving on the left side of the road too! My first was a 1955 VW, wish I had that one back.
Last Feburary I purchased a 1973 Super Beetle that was almost completely disassembled, and had no engine. This car was my therapy during nine weeks of radiation treatments this summer.
Can someone explain the emissions situation, A friend tells me none of the VW's pass without special setup , true or false?  I must go get it tested next week.

Welcome aboard - can't help you with the smog stuff I'm afraid, but someone here will be able to.

is your engine completely stock, in good working order, and correctly tuned? If so, you should have no issues passing emissions. If not, then take it over to Chirco and have them tune it up and it will pass.

Well, It did not pass the first time through. New Carb, plug wires, plugs and a solid state ignition system, and I still had to back the timing off to where it barely ran to get it to pass. Banghead
