It's my understanding that this thread may be moved to within a Bugtoberfest catagory but I think it's ok to go ahead and start this here.

This will be a Chirco exclusive so if you're used to seeing a design I'm working on posted on another site, that's not happening with this particular one.  You are all encouraged to share the link to this or what becomes the main development thread on other sites you visit if you want to let folks in on what's happening.

Here we go:

This years Bugtoberfest design will feature three vehicle types we haven't done on a shirt before.  They are as follows.

Frenchy's 52 Split:

The feature car will be the winner of last years Bugtoberfest Best in Show.  This 52 split is owned by famed Phoenician, Frenchy.  His last name is french and if I try to spell it off the top of my head I'll slaughter it and that wouldn't be very nice.  I do know it starts with a D.  Something else I do know is Frenchy is a VW guy 40 years or so.  He's been featured in every magazine and then some.  He is a fixture at almost every show out here in Arizona and he is one of the coolest guys you'd ever want to meet.  His home is a VW shrine... great guy with great cars so yay for Frenchy.

Thayer's Bus:

Thayer is another Phoenician though he may take offense at being called that and if you know him, you know having him not pleased at you is not a good thing. Smiley  That's a joke about his size as he is a man of great stature but I know him personally and he is a kind soul for sure. Thayer's bus is you classic street sleeper.  Sure he's got the mismatch doors and it's not sittin on earlies like his pals cars do, but I believe he's running a 2332 in that thing and when he puts his foot into it....wow.  So...yay for Thayer.

Aquabuggys Buggy:

Third and by far not the least we have Aquabuggy's buggy.  This vehicle is significant for a few reasons.  Number one it's bada_s.  That's a technical term that means BADA_S! Smiley  Also this vehicle was picked for this shirt by Chirco employee and big time cool guy Frank.  Frank said it was everything a buggy should be to him.  The biggest part of this vehicles selection is the fact that it is owned by a Chirco Forum member and was selected for that reason.  I don't know of many other VW related forums that would have a contest for it's members...a cyber show if you will...and then feature the winners car on their show shirt.  This is a tradition we hope to establish at Chirco and we are proud of Aquabuggy being named our inaugural winner so yay for Aquabuggy.

So...3 vehicle types never before on a Bugtoberfest shirt.  A split, a Bus, and a Buggy...yay for the shirt.

The design process will start in about a week or so and will once again be an exclusive Chirco event.  As I have been spending time in the hot rod world this years design will take on some influences from some of the things I have seen and worked with in that environment.

I will try to be as informative and open in my design process as I can.  As with anything it may not be the thing that everybody likes but the novelty of being able to follow along as the shirt and art is created is something that you will find only at Chirco and that in and of itself makes it kinda cool.

I hope you all enjoy.

more soon

Here's my thumbnail.  Don and I have already discussed the overall design so you will get a chance to see it happen. Right now it's not as critical as the renderings will take priority.  This is just to get my thoughts down.  I'm a sloppy sloppy sketcher but I can see it in there.  All the chirco designs I've done start out here.

I'll see if I can find last years.

In any case we are actually a week or so out from starting the drawing but I may try to step it up so this doesn't just flounder.

Last year's design

http://www.chircoestore.com/catalog/smf/index.php?topic=2429.0

as I recall I did the last car rendering while I was at the Busses and Balloons show in Albuquerque.  It really was a good time.

Last years shirt came out pretty ok.  I'm glad I got to work on it.

I'm really glad Chirco gives me an opportunity o try to get better.

Thanks to them.

whew

after much other stuff gettin in the way we are finally here.

I redid the comp cause it was too nasty even for me.

I decided to do Frenchy's car first.  No real reason just random.  I figure it doesn't matter which one is first so long as they all get done.

First thing is the pencil work.

I did a rough and then transferred it on my light table and made a slightly tighter rough

I'm not much of a realist so I try not to get caught up in details.  I was going to just move forward with this one, but I think I'll make it a little larger and transfer one more time.  I can work out some of the kinks that way then move into the linework in Illustrator.

Thanks to Chirco for giving me an opportunity again and thanks to DHP Fasty and DHP TJ for goin to Frenchy's house and shooting pictures for me.

I got this...thanks

I'm listening to The Partridge Family and Hansen's MMM-Bop!

 Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy

oh wait that's you again!

 Cheesy Cheesy

It's rare that I do something I like.  This one is close though.  I don't think it's the linework which I always see flaws in (real or imagined), in this case I think the character of his bus is there.  It feels like Thayers bus.  I got lucky   Cheesy

here's the pencil rough on the buggy.

I'm going to transfer it again and fix everything.  It's a pretty good start for me though.

still rough but good enough to let me go to Frenchy's.  I'll come back and tweak on this before render but like I've said before, I suck at real but I do like parts of this one for sure.
