What lube goes into the steering box, and where do you put it in??  Does the screw with lock nut on top of the box take out the slop in the steering??

Hi dj Smiley ,
90W gear oil, same as in the manual trans Wink http://www.vw-resource.com/steering.html
If it's old fluid then best to just pull the top(#5)

off & completely flush it clean, refill it as high as you can & reintstall the top with a new gasket, that way you won't have to readjust the roller setting if it's already set up correctly Cool .
To reeeeally Cool smooth out the operation of both the steering box & MT 1st toss in a few dollops of molysulfide grease http://www.google.com/#hl=en&q=molybdenum+disulfide+grease&sa=X&ei=S9lLUbb1IaboiAKS94CwAQ&ved=0CCwQ7xYoAA&bav=on.2,or.&bvm=bv.44158598,d.cGE&fp=3e8974a8d86e3483&biw=1280&bih=832
or a few squirts of Power Punch http://www.google.com/#hl=en&gs_rn=7&gs_ri=psy-ab&gs_mss=power%20punch%20manual%20trnsmission%20lubricant&pq=power%20punch%20lubricant&cp=22&gs_id=2c&xhr=t&q=power+punch+manual+transmission+lubricant&es_nrs=true&pf=p&sclient=psy-ab&oq=power+punch+manual+transmission+lubricant&gs_l=&pbx=1&bav=on.2,or.&fp=3e8974a8d86e3483&biw=1280&bih=832
before topping them out with the 90W Wink .

My new TRW steering box had no oil in it, I pulled the 2 plastic plugs out of the top cover and filled through one hole and the other works as a vent to purge out the air.
But a few months later I noticed the gear oil was seeping out of the output shaft and lately the steering was getting a little stiff  sooooo I showed it and injected grease into the box to make a thick soup of 1/2 oil and 1/2 grease, It steers better now.
The top adjuster screw and lock nut, If i remember right... adjust with the wheels straight and the front jacked up, loosen the lock nut and gently turn in the screw a little bit, and check for play to decrease (dont crank the screw down tight or the steering will be tight and ultimately damage the box) then lock the nut and go for a drive  Smiley

Hi Buggyman, that power punch looks slippery, is it good in a manual transmission too? I was considering synthetic?!? Now I don't know.  Beer

Dayo ccr Smiley ,Power Punch started out as a manual trans additive, when used with a GL4 Wink MTF http://www.ratwell.com/technical/GearOil.html things tend to roll off each other slicker than snickers Cheesy Cool .
