We lost all of the photos from this page.
Here is the kit we used.

Here we installing our new 5 Lug front disc brake kit. We wanted to see how well they work and see if there was going to be any challenges installing them. We installed them with the newest member of the Chirco Service Department team, John Bol.

Project Baja had stock drum brake that the drums were drilled and had 14mm press in studs and Porshe style lug nuts hold on the Centerline wheels.

Ok time to start disassembling. This is going to be where I start getting in John's way.

We also want to replace the stock jam nuts with aluminum jam nuts because of how easy these are to adjust and we will no longer need to run a lock washer. They also look cool, while the dust cap is off. :)

Three more bolts to take the backing plate of the spindle. The shoes, wheel cylinders and hardware can stay in place. This way you can sell them at a higher price at the next swapmeet to recoop the money you spent for the disc brake kit. LOL

The spindles need some more cleaning up and then we are ready to install the disc brake kit. So far John has not given me any dirty looks for being in his way. Give him a couple of months.

You can see the bracket that will hold on the calipar, that thing is big!
It bolted right on and clears the steering arm of the spindle well. So far so good, we really hope that this kit is very easy to install.

John then installed the inner race, inner breaing and needs to install the wheel seal. I did not mention this earlier, but this kit came with all the hardware, bearings and seals. It also came with an early bus master cylinder and stock brake hoses for link pin front ends. We are running stainless steel hoses and already had the same 22mm master cylinder.

From this photo you can see the aluminum jam nut. These jam nuts have an allen bolt that locks the nut securly in place. It is a much easier installation then the two nuts and lock washer in the stock assembally.

You will notice that the pads are two differant sizes. the larger pad is the outer one. John shared with me that roughly 80% of your braking comes from the front.

The pads are installed first on to the bracket. The outer pad must be inserted from the bottom first. The inner pad is a no brainer.

On the calipar you will need to remove the pre installed bushing so your new calipar bolt can go through. You can use the new bolt to push out the bushing out. You can discard these bushings.

These new calipars slip on very easily.
Again I must say we are impressed with the kit.

Make sure your calipar is behind the bracket on the outerside to keep it in place. You can see the notch that hold it in place.

John has successfuly installed the disc brake conversion kit.
All that is left is to
install brake hoses and bleed brakes.
I will have to give the manifacture a call and give the kudo's.

Since we are running Centerline wheels the need for a longer screw in style stud was neccessary. We also need to use a conversion washer and accorn style lug nuts. The end of the screw in stud has an allen head socket for easy installation. You will need to use some red lock tight.

All studs are installed and the dust cap is back on.

Here is a nice photo from underneth. Great job John.

I also want to say thanks to Alan Close at Apocalypso. He designed and sent me the strips that is on both doors. This gives a very nice look to Project Baja Bug. Lets give Alan a plug, www.apocdesign.com
Next we are going to install
disc brakes to the rear with another new kit.
